Many years ago I was attending a Hair class in Nashville at the Opryland Hotel. I was hanging out in my hotel room because I never really felt comfortable with other hairdressers at shows. It always seemed that everyone was always trying to prove how much better they where then you and being pretentious. No one ever talked about anything important or anything with substance, mostly just putting on airs.
But in my room there was a program on TV about St. Jude’s. I watched the whole show and after that I knew I wanted to work with health challenged children. At that time I had no idea in what capacity but that I would work with children.
A few months later I was in a staff meeting of a salon I worked for and one of the owners announced he wanted to start a non-profit for kids to provide wigs to children that suffered hair loss from chemo. He wanted to know if anyone was interested in helping.Right then I knew it was me. I thought I already know how to do hair so of course this is what I am suppose to do with these children.
As I got more involved I realized that there were lots of women who faced this problem. these women were so frightened of their illness and so scarred of losing their hair. Going into a wig shop was so foreign and impersonal to them. They were use to coming to a salon so I thought why can’t they still come to a salon to get their new hair.
I soon began attending many classes and seminars on wigs and hairpieces as possible. I met a lot of professional people who were eager to share their ideas and secrets. To talk openly about how they achieved success for their special”wig” clients. I knew then that this was clearly what my purpose was; To help women walk thru their medical hair loss with confidence and dignity.
Now my purpose has become my passion….
